Saints Leander and Isidore

Seville Cathedral

On the left is Leander, the older of the two brothers, with a grayer beard. He has the episcopal mitre, crozier, and cope because he was Bishop of Seville from 579 to 600. Isidore is on the right in identical garb but also holding a pen, a reference to his extensive writing on an imposing range of topics.

Seville Cathedral with its tall tower is seen in the arched window in the upper center of the painting. The tiles that lead to the window are painted in linear perspective, suggesting a date during or more likely after the 15th century development of that technique in Italy.
